| Technology: Ultrasonic Interferometry |
|
|
|
| Ultrasonic Interferometry is a new technology implementation of principles known and used for many years. Our patent-pending approach is different and is very sensitive to changes in the acoustic properties of fluids due to the presence of contamination, or intentially added material.
An instrument or sensor based upon this method uses two ultrasonic transducers facing each other; both are immersed in the sample fluid. Ultrasonic frequencies are passed between the transducers and the temperature is measured. Standing waves are generated between the transducers and the resultant signal strength and signal frequency interpreted to yield information about the fluid or components in the fluid. Some data cannot not readily be obtainable by other methods. The temperature of the fluid is accurately measured within the sensing region during the measurement process.

Multi-Frequency Data
Multiple data points may be measured simply by changing the frequency of sound between the transducers. The number of wavelengths will change, as will the frequency of the standing waves measured. |

Sound Velocity
The speed (velocity) of sound in fluids falls midway between that the speed in gases (approx. 331 m/s in dry air at 0°C) and that in solids (approx 3000 - 6000 m/s depending on material and the type of sound wave). The speed of sound in oils is typically 1650 m/s at room temperature and varies very linearly with temperature by approximately -3.5 m/s per °C. The higher the temperature the slower the speed. Water is a special case and the velocity varies non-linearly with temperature. For more details request further information.

| When sound travels through a medium, its intensity diminishes with the distance traveled. It also varies quite considerably with the sound frequency. The higher the frequency the more the attenuation change with distance. Low frequency sound can travel considerable distances, but high frequency sound dissipates in very short distances. |
